Kumamon makes a big impression on paddy field
TAMANA, Kumamoto Prefecture--Beloved Kumamoto Prefecture mascot Kumamon has found its niche in Japanese culture, and now the popular bear has made its mark on the land, too.
Kumamon’s image, often seen on cuddly toys and T-shirts, has now appeared in a paddy field on the north side of JR Shin-Tamana Station here, to the delight of passengers and passers-by.

今回取り上げるのは、“niche”/nítʃ/という表現です。この単語は、西洋建築で「壁龕(へきがん)、像や飾り物などを置く壁面のくぼみ」を意味しますが、今回の記事ではこれとは異なる意味で用いられています。
そこで“niche”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“if you find your niche, you find a job or activity that is very suitable for you”と定義されていました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には「〔人・物に〕最適の地位〔場所、仕事〕」といった意味記載されていました。したがって、この記事では「(くまモンが)日本文化におけるこれまで欠落して部分を埋めた，新たな分野を創出した」などと表せます。(ninetails)
