staycation 復習
ニューヨーカーはどのように休暇を過ごすのでしょうか。

Mayor Bill de Blasio surprised everyone this week when his office announced at the last minute that he and his family were leaving town for a weeklong vacation, their second of the summer.
But some other New Yorkers (this columnist included) won’t be able to get away anytime soon.
In that case, a well-executed staycation can be just as relaxing.
今回取り上げるのは“staycation”です。
Oxford dictionaries.com.では“A holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.”と定義され、遠出をすぐにするわけにもいかないので、家や近場に“stay”して過ごすことが分かります。
語源はstay-at-home + vacationだそうですが、stay-at-homeにハイフンがついていたので、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）をみてみると「（略式）家にばかりいる人、出不精の人」を指すそうです。
たしかにニューヨークには博物館、美術館、セントラルパークなど様々な施設がたくさんあります。わざわざ遠くまで行かなくても、自分流の休日を楽しめそうです。(flyingbird)
