メディア各社が報道しているイタリア中部を襲った大地震（本ブログでもluaさんがふれていました）。JT Onlineの記事では死者は37名と出ていますが，この数は時間とともに更新され，CNNでは現在、159名となっています。

「こわれる」という意味のbreakには「〈夜明けが〉始まる」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。英英辞書にもwhen the day or the dawn breaks, the sky gets light（LDOCE）とありました。日本語では「夜が明ける」と言うため，＊Night broke.としないように注意が必要です。

Powerful quake flattens villages in central Italy
AMATRICE, ITALY – A powerful magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday, devastating mountain villages and leaving at least 37 people dead. Local officials indicated the death toll was likely to rise.
Numerous buildings collapsed in small communities close to the epicenter of the quake in a thinly populated area straddling the regions of Umbria, Marche and Lazio.
As dawn broke, residents and emergency services were scrambling to rescue people trapped in rubble.The shocks were strong enough to wake residents of central Rome, 150 kilometers (90 miles) to the southwest.
The hardest-hit towns were Amatrice, Accumoli near Rieti, and Pescara del Tronto farther east.
