昨日の裏ゼミで出てきた“tangy”について調べていたところ、季節風によってできるインドの紫色のプラムのレシピを紹介するサイトにたどり着きました。

tangyは形容詞で「（いい意味で）強い味・匂いのある、風味の強い」という意味があり、名詞のtangは「（レモンなどの強い心地いい）香り、味。気配、気味」となります。（『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）より）
また、「辛いお酒」を表現する場合もtangyを使うことを先生に教わりました。
このtangの語源をOxford dictionaries.com.で見てみると、まずは古代ノルウェー語の「点、ナイフの先」を表す“tangi”から、中英語で「蛇の舌」となったことが由来のようです。蛇の舌は内臓や昆虫を突き刺すと信じられていたようです。
同上英英辞典サイトでは“The projection on the blade of a tool such as a knife, by which the blade is held firmly in the handle”という定義もあり、「香り」よりも「鋭い気配」の方の意味が先に生まれたことが分かります。(flyingbird)
