“paraphernalia” /pærəfɚnéɪljə/ を取りあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「道具類一式, 私物, もろもろのこと」とありました。語源を調べてみると中世ラテン語で「花嫁の品」としての意味があり、そこから現在では赤ちゃん用品などの「用品」という意味で使われることがあることがわかりました。
「妻の身の回り品, 所有物」という意味から関連して、英語のタイトルは“Beguiled”となるそうですが、「花嫁の持参金」というロマンス小説があることを知りました。(lua)
