dropの気になる用法
裏ゼミ続行です。今，学生たちは語彙の問題をやっていますので、その間をぬって、ひとつ。
dropといえば，動詞を例にとると「滴らす」，「落とす」という語義が一般的で，さらに「幕などを降ろす」、「〈品質などを〉下げる」、「ふと口にする」「〈伝言などを〉伝える」、「〈訴訟を〉取り下げる」などなど、実に多彩な意味を持つ多義語です。
本ブログでもこうした多義のdropを何度となくとりあげてきていますが、以下のdropはどうでしょうか。
'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' set for magical midnight release
It's a big weekend for Harry Potter fans.
Nearly ten years since the final book J.K. Rowling wrote for the franchise, a new installment, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," drops at midnight. The timing is fitting -- Sunday is Potter's birthday, and Rowling's.
But the book is not a novel, and it's not written by Rowling. Instead, it's the script of the play of the same name, currently running in London. Rowling's hand isn't totally absent from it, though -- playwrights Jack Thorne and John Tiffany collaborated with her for the story.
ここは，a new installment, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," drops at midnight.という形でdropが用いられています。installmentも気にはなりますが、それを受ける動詞 dropの用法が一番気になります。
一般的なdropの用法とはちと違うdrop，実は数年前あたりから、ちらちらとネット上で見かけるようになりました。用例を今ひとつ。

With the 2016 E3 in full swing, major announcements and details keep dropping one after the other. The latest news coming from the trade show is Capcom's announcement that its newest sequel, "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard," will be released early next year.
いずれも意味は前後から類推ができます。そうです、dropは「アルバムや新作をリリースする」という意味合いで用いられているのです。日本の学習辞書では、まだこの語義はカバーされていないようです。（リーダーズはどうでしょうか？）困ったときの神頼みは、やはりあれでしょう。
urbandictionary.comのdrop v.を見てみますと、
1. To knock someone over, usually associated with the first hit in a fight.
2. To spend (generally a lot of) money; to buy something.
3. To release an album.
とあります。３番の用法がこれですね。親切にも、
3. Nelly dropped two albums at once this week and they both at the top of the charts.
という例文も添えてあります。
確認のためも、別のネット辞書（スラングの！）をチェックしてみますと、
to be released to the public. Typically used to refer to artistic works, especially music albums.My album drops on the first of the month.

と定義されています。dropには「羊が子どもを産む、産出する」という意味がありますので、そのイメージが発展したのでしょうか。それとも「もらす」「垂れ流す」の意味がSNS的に拡大したものでしょうか。
Kawaなんとかという学生がいたら調べてくれるのでしょうが、その彼も卒業してしまったので残念！
