今回取り上げるのは、“pipe up”という表現です。“pipe”と聞くと、「パイプ、導管」や「管楽器」といった名詞での意味を連想しますが、この記事では動詞で用いられています。
まずLDOCEで調べてみると、“to speak or sing something in a high voice”と定義されており、また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には「〜と甲高い声で言う〔歌う〕」などと記載されていました。「weblio英和辞典」には、“pipe”は「ひな鳥のピーピーという声」を意味するラテン語が語源だとあり、ここから上記のような「甲高い声」を表すようになったと考えられます。(ninetails)
