The contrasts are everywhere, as we found when we arrived in Tokyo and went to our hotel, the Andaz, not far from the Imperial Palace.
Our room on the 50th floor had a traditional circular bath where two could sit and soak, a computerised toilet where the heated seat opened when you approached it and a floor-to-ceiling window commanding panoramic views of the combined megalopolis that is Tokyo and Yokohama.
We looked out in awe over a cityscape of more than 30 million people crammed together, cheek by jowl. How could it possibly work?

今回取り上げる表現は、 "cheek by jowl "です。文脈から大混雑している様子を表しているのかなと考えました。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “close together”とのことでした。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）によると、「〈人・物が〉[…と]ぴったりくっつき合って；〈人が〉[…と]親密[で][with]」と載っておりました。ほおと顎が接していることから、このような表現がうまれたそうです。
日本人からすればそんなに混んでいない状況でさえも、外国人の方にとっては “cheek by jowl”に見えているのかもしれないと思いました。（Gomez）
