この記事の中で気になった表現は，“could not have its cake and eat it too”です。直訳すると，「ケーキを持っていて，かつ食べることはできない」ということになります。実際どのようなか意味を調べてみると，Cambridge Dictionaryには，“have your cake and eat it too”で“to have or do two good things at the same time that are impossible to have or do at the same time”と記載されていました。また，『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）を確認すると，「一度に二つよいことはない」と載っていました。

“You can’t have your cake and eat it too”の他に“You can’t eat your cake and have it too”と表すことが出来ます。これらに関する記事がNew York Timesにありました。この記事によると，最初は，後者の表現が使われていました。しかし，１７４９年頃に前者の表現が一般的に使用されるように変化していきました。さらに，１９４０年頃に再び後者の表現が用いられるようになりました。個人的には，興味深いなと感じました。下記にＵＲＬを貼付しました。ご参考までに。(Nao)
