LONDON — Misaki Doi knocked off 15th-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to move into the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in five years.
Doi seemed to look at ease as she played match point. Following a shot behind her opponent that ended the match, Doi sported a smile of satisfaction as the world No. 49 dominated the world No. 17 player.
Doi got her revenge against the player who beat her in a Wimbledon warm-up by beating Pliskova on the big stage. Taking the first-set tiebreak was a major factor in the victory.
A short rain delay interrupted play, but it was Doi who was able to endure and keep her competitive focus when play resumed.
Meanwhile, Carina Witthoeft of Germany eased past Kurumi Nara 6-3, 6-0.
In first-round women’s doubles action, Shuko Aoyama and Makoto Ninomiya beat Nadiia Kichenok and Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine, 6-1, 6-1.
