Stonewall 復習
先日に引き続き、オーランドでの銃乱射事件を受けての記事からです。

Our city continues to mourn the tragedy in Orlando.
Vigils were held at Bennett Park in Washington Heights and, for the second night in a row, at the Stonewall Inn, a gay rights landmark.
Thousands packed streets in the West Village for a memorial attended by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. The governor called for gun control and said the event was “New York at its best, coming together to speak with one voice.”
For much of the day, a somber atmosphere hung around the Stonewall Inn.
Passers-by dropped off flowers and candles in front of the bar.
A spontaneous vigil began across the street at Christopher Park when Annie Lanzillotto, 53, an artist from the Bronx, began writing the names of the victims on the brick floor.
今回取り上げる表現は、"stonewall"です。
そのまま訳すと、「石の壁」となりますが、『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)で調べてみると、「引き延ばし戦術を取る、(会議で長い演説、質問などをして)擬似妨害する、審議拒否をする」や「(クリケット)慎重にプレーする、(議事、人などを)妨害する」という意味もありました。
しかしここでは、記事にもありますようにNYのグリニッチビレッジにあるgay right movement発祥の地という意味で用いられています。(Akim)
