Ise Jingu embodies Japanese spirituality

The Ise-Shima region, the venue for the G-7 summit meeting, is known as the home of Ise Jingu, a Shinto shrine venerated by many Japanese. Believed to date back about 2,000 years, Ise Jingu is the foundation of Japanese spirituality. This year’s G-7 summit will also serve to let the world know more about the rich traditions of Japan, which Ise Jingu embodies.

Ise Jingu enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, considered the kami (deity) of the ancestors of the Imperial family and venerated by Shintoists. Also enshrined here is Toyouke-no-Omikami, regarded as the guardian deity of industry who provides meals for Amaterasu Omikami.

Jinja Honcho, a religious juridical body covering about 80,000 Shinto shrines throughout Japan, ranks Ise Jingu as the most sacred of them all.

Ise Jingu ofuda are distributed to Shinto shrines throughout Japan before the New Year. The Jingureki, a calendar compiling handy information on farming, astronomy and weather, has been used for home gardening and other purposes in recent years.

本日取り上げる表現は “juridical” です。

『新英和大辞典』(第五版, 研究社)には, 「1. 司法上の, 裁判上の 2. 法律上の」と記されていました。しかし今回の場合, これでは意味がよく伝わりません。

上記の辞典で単語の成り立ちを見ると, “jus” 「1. (抽象的に)法, 法組織 2. 法的権利」という意を含む表現であることがわかりました。

このことから, 日本全国の神社を統括している組織を “a religious juridical body” と示したのだと思います。(Cayu)
