And as online finance is becoming a more important part of their business models, they are presenting increasingly stiff competition for the country’s traditional financial institutions.

今回取り上げる表現は、見出しにあるleapfrogです。leapとあるので飛び越すイメージを抱きました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）でleapfrogを調べた結果、名詞で「馬跳び」、動詞で「（人・事業などに）先んじる，優位に立つ」などの意味がありました。
記事から考えると、「先んじる」などの意味がしっくりくるかと思います。またplayを加えることにより、まるで馬跳びをしているかのような勢いの良さを表しているようにも思いました。
記事とは直接関係はありませんが、日本ではかがむ人に焦点を当て馬跳びと呼んでいるのに対し、英語では飛ぶ人に焦点を当てleapfrogと呼んでいることに面白みを感じました。（Gomez）
