Japan loses bid for Australian submarines

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced that his country will jointly develop and build its new fleet of submarines with France.

Japan and Germany had also submitted bids, but were not chosen. Australia plans to build 12 submarines and put them into service in the 2030s.

Turnbull spoke at a news conference in the suburbs of Adelaide on Tuesday. He said the new submarines need to have cutting-edge technology, and the French offer represents the capabilities best-able to meet his country's needs.

Japan had set up a public-private consortium in an effort to be selected.

If chosen, it would have been Japan's first time to play a leading role in joint defense development under new guidelines for the transfer of military technology and equipment.
