Top court apologizes for leprosy trials

The Supreme Court on Monday apologized to former leprosy patients and others for “special courts” set up for about 25 years after the end of World War II where leprosy patients were tried at isolation facilities and other locations.

“We deeply express remorse over and apologize for the fact that [the special courts] encouraged prejudice and discrimination against [leprosy] patients and harmed their integrity and dignity,” Yukihiko Imasaki, secretary general of the Supreme Court who heads the Supreme Court’s General Secretariat, said at a press conference.

The Supreme Court acknowledged that the use of such courts from 1960 at the latest was illegal. It is extremely unusual for the top court to make an apology, admitting errors in past judicial procedures.
