Kumamoto schools struggling to reopen

KUMAMOTO (Jiji Press) — Some public schools, including primary schools, reopened in Kumamoto Prefecture on Monday following a suspension caused by a series of strong earthquakes that rocked the prefecture and nearby areas.
While many other schools in Kumamoto Prefecture also plan to reopen later this week or after the holiday period through May 8, full resumption of classes at all public schools in the prefecture, totaling over 300, is still nowhere in sight, as there are schools whose facilities have been damaged and whose classrooms are being used as evacuation sites.
According to the education board of the city of Kumamoto, 95 primary schools and 42 middle schools in the city have been closed since the day after a magnitude-6.5 quake measuring the maximum intensity of 7 on the Japanese seismic scale, the first in the series of strong quakes, hit the prefecture on April 14.
In other municipalities of the prefecture, 103 primary schools, 48 middle schools and 27 high schools remained closed as of Monday, according to data compiled by the prefecture.

今回取り上げるのはseismic scaleです。seismicを『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、形容詞で「（限定）地震の、地震性の」という意味があることが分かりました。LDOCEでも調べてみますと、“relating to or caused by earthquakes” という意味が見つかりました。
seismicという綴りからは地球や地理などの要素が感じられなかったので、語源が気になり、調べてみました。すると、seismicはギリシャ語のseismoからきていることばで、seismoは地震を表すことばのようです。seismic scaleで震度となります。
