Woman dies from economy class syndrome in Kumamoto

The first death from economy class syndrome has been reported among the survivors of the powerful quakes that hit Japan's southwestern island of Kyushu.

A 51-year-old woman who had been staying in her car in Kumamoto city became ill on Monday. She was taken to hospital and treated for a pulmonary embolism, or a blocked artery in her lungs, but died about 1 hour later.

City officials say she may have developed deep vein thrombosis, which is sometimes referred to as economy class syndrome. This is a condition in which a blood clot
forms, often in the legs, after a person remains stationary in a cramped space for a prolonged period. The clot can travel to the lungs and cause respiratory difficulties or cardiac failure.

(Cayu)
