Evacuee shelters overcrowded
KUMAMOTO — Many shelters in Kumamoto Prefecture have been overfilling with residents as a series of powerful quakes have been hitting the area since Thursday, with some evacuees unable to find any room to stay inside.
Local shelters are facing a far greater number of evacuees than their capacity as an increasing number of houses have been destroyed while aftershocks do not seem to lose momentum. With quite a few residents staying overnight inside their vehicles, there has been growing concern over their health conditions.

“There are so many people inside the building that it’s hard to find space to walk through,” said a 72-year-old who had a mat under the eaves. “I’m wondering until when we will have to go through days like this.”

『新英和大辞典』(第五版, 研究社)によると, “eaves” は「1. 軒, ひさし 2. (丘などの)突き出た端」とありました。 “an eave trough” では「(横の)雨樋」を指すそうです。
これにより, “under the eaves” は「軒下に, 軒下で」となり, 今回は避難されている方が非常に狭く, 限られた空間で過ごされている様子がうかがえます。
屋内だけではなく、文字通り、避難所の軒下にもスペースを確保せざるをえないという状況であることがわかります。
