KANAZAWA — The total number of passengers who have taken the Hokuriku Shinkansen line reached 10 million on Wednesday morning, the 397th day after service was extended to Kanazawa on March 14 last year. During a ceremony at Kanazawa Station, the executive vice president of West Japan Railway Co.’s Kanazawa branch made a greeting address, saying the business “is sustaining strong performance in its second year of operation. We’d like to firmly establish the vigor of the Hokuriku region.”

今回取り上げる表現はvigorです。LDOCEで調べてみますと、”physical or mental energy and determination” という意味があることがわかりました。また、vigorはAmerican English、　vigour はBritish English と表記されておりましたので、綴りに違いがあることもわかりました。

次に『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみますと、「1活力、精力（energy）、元気、気力（vitality）、体力　2（ことば、態度などの）強さ、迫力」という意味があることがわかりました。ここでの意味を1の活力、精力であてはめると「北陸地域の活力をしっかりと確立していきたい」という意味になるかと思います。
