New justice team to support people wrongly accused of crime

KYOTO--A group of lawyers and scholars has started a project to save people who have been charged with crimes they did not commit.

The Innocence Project Japan (IPJ), the first private-sector venture of its kind in the country, was launched at Ritsumeikan University and about 20 experts have volunteered to work pro bono to prevent miscarriages of justice.

They will appraise evidence in cooperation with retired officials of police research institutes that deal in scientific investigations.

今回取り上げるのは、“pro bono”という表現です。この表現をLDOCEで調べてみると、“used to describe work that someone, especially a lawyer, does without getting paid”と定義されていました。

また『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）には、形容詞で「〔法〕（弁護士などが行う）無料奉仕の」と記載されており、この記事で扱われている「イノセンス・プロジェクト」のような「各分野の専門家が、職業上持つ知識や技能を活かして無償で行う社会貢献活動」を指す際に用いられます。ちなみに、この表現はラテン語で「公共善のために」を意味する“pro bono publico”の略であると分かりました。(ninetails)
