Swimming: Kitajima scrapes into 200 breaststroke final, keeps Rio hopes alive

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Kosuke Kitajima kept alive his hopes for a fifth Olympic appearance by a hair, squeezing into the men's 200-meter breaststroke final at the national championships on Thursday.

Kitajima finished third overall in the semifinal heats with a 2 minute, 10.16 second finish behind Ippei Watanabe (2:09.46) and Yasuhiro Koseki (2:09.98). Kitajima was one of eight swimmers who clocked 2 minutes, 10 seconds, with two failing to advance to Friday's final.

For the 33-year-old former two-time double Olympic champion to make the cut for Rio de Janeiro, he must finish the final in the top two while meeting the qualifying standard of 2:09.54.

"It's so competitive, really," said Kitajima, who was seventh overall in the morning heats. "I've got my back against the wall. I was nervous. It was so close anyone could have gone through."

"I'm not going to lie, I was scared. But you only get this scared or compete in this kind of intensity because the Olympics are on the line, and I love that feeling like you're gambling."

まず、scrapeで『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第５版　大修館書店）を引くと「1.（物の表面）をこする　2.（体の一部）を（場所で）すりむく、こする　3.（物）をこすって不快な音を出す　4.（勝利、合格などを）苦労して得る　5.（穴）を掻き出して作る　6.（髪）を後ろになでつける」とありました。ここでは、競技の話をしているので4の意味で使われていることがわかります。
LDOCEでも”to win a race, election, or competition by a very small amount”の定義が見つかりました。
そして、scrape intoで調べると「（仕事）をなんとか得る；辛うじて合格する；（試合）に辛勝する」とありました。

北島選手は全体の3位に入賞し、決勝進出を果たしましたが、1位の渡辺選手と2位の小関選手はいずれも２分９秒台です。それに対し、北島選手は10秒台であることから「なんとか決勝に進出した」との意味合いが含まれていると思いました。
