A man suspected of abducting a teenage girl who recently escaped from two years of captivity might have checked up on her beforehand as he called her by her full name when they first met on a street, police said Tuesday.
The 15-year-old girl who fled his apartment in Tokyo’s Nakano Ward on Sunday said during a police investigation that the suspect, 23-year-old Kabu Terauchi, called her by name when she was going home from school on March 10, 2014.

容疑者が少女と初対面の時にフルネームで名前を呼んでいたことから、この場合は１の意味で使われていることが分かります。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"investigate in order to establish the truth about or accuracy of"と定義されています。
今回は動詞として使われていますが、名詞としてのcheckup（check-up）は「健康診断、検診、（詳しい）検査、総点検」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』）という意味があります。先日、先生に健康診断をa physical（checkup)ということを教えていただいたのを思い出しました。(flyingbird)
