3月20日、オバマ大統領は、現職米大統領として88年振りにキューバに訪問しました。約54年間に渡る断交から国交回復の大きな一歩となるでしょう。

今回取り上げるのは、"bury the last remnant of"という表現です。

まず、"bury"を手持ちのジーニアス英和辞典第4版で調べてみると、「<人が> <人>を[〜の下に]埋葬する」という意味の他に、「<感情・記憶など>を葬り去る、忘れる、隠す」という意味がありました。次に、"remnant"をLDOCEで調べてみると、"a small part of something that remains after the rest of it has been used, destroyed, or eaten" とありました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版で調べてみますと、「残り、残部、名残、遺物」とありました。
したがって、"bury the last remnant of"は、「〜の最後の残りを葬り去る(忘れ去る)」という意味になるかと思います。「冷戦最後の積み残した問題を解決する」（少なくとも米国側の思惑としては）と読み取れます。(Akim)
