claim 復習

それでは、本題に入ります。今回はカナダのスウィフトカレントで行われた、女子カーリング世界選手権の話題から英語表現を拾っていきます。
Japan wins silver medal at women’s curling worlds
Japan won a silver medal at the World Women’s Curling Championship in Swift Current, Canada, on Sunday.
This marked the first podium finish for Japanese curlers at a world championships or Olympics, representing a major step forward by the Japanese women’s team toward a berth in the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Switzerland claimed its third straight gold medal, defeating LS Kitami, the team representing Japan, 9-6. LS Kitami comprised Satsuki Fujisawa, Chinami Yoshida, Yumi Suzuki and Yurika Yoshida.
LS Kitami scored three points in the eighth end, leading Switzerland 6-5. But the Japanese team lost two points each in the ninth and 10th ends.

今回取り上げるのは、claimです。一番に思いつくのは、「〜を主張する」というものですが、ここではどうでしょうか。辞書で調べてみたところ、「〈地位・賞など〉を勝ち取る、得る」（『ウィズダム英和辞典』第３版、三省堂）という意味があることがわかりました。Macmillan Dictionary Com.には，claimの第４義として，"[TRANSITIVE] MAINLY JOURNALISM to win something such as a prize or a top position in sport"とあり，
1976 was also the year Borg claimed his first Wimbledon title.
という例文が示されていました。記事のSwitzerland claimed its third straight gold medal..では、「スイスが世界選手権の三連覇を果たした」となります。
また、claimの別の用法として、書き言葉で「〈事故・災害などが〉〈人命〉を奪う」（『ウィズダム英和辞典』第３版、三省堂）というものもありました。The fire claimed five lives.のように用いられるようです。
