Hopes grow for Hokkaido Shinkansen extension
SAPPORO (Jiji Press) — Local communities in Hokkaido are increasingly hoping to see the Hokkaido Shinkansen Line extended to Sapporo earlier than planned as a shot in the arm for the regional economy.
The bullet train line, which went into service on Saturday on the section between Shin-Aomori Station in Aomori Prefecture and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station in the Hokkaido city of Hokuto, is currently scheduled to be extended to Sapporo by the end of fiscal 2030.
After the extension, Shinkansen trains will link Tokyo and Sapporo in about five hours and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Sapporo in about an hour.
