今回取り上げる表現は “pummel”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版』（大修館書店）では「…を（こぶしで）何回も打つ[殴る]」とあり，LDOCEでは “to hit someone or something many times quickly, especially using you fists(= closed hands)”と定義されています。ここでは雪が大地に打ち付けるかのように降る猛吹雪だということを示しています。（Inaho）
