helluva

オスカー賞受賞の候補者が2年連続で、全て白人であったことから、人種的な多様性に欠くなどの批判を受けていましたが、主催者の映画芸術科学アカデミーはこの批判を受け、2020年までに女性と人種的マイノリティーの会員を倍にすると発表しました。

本日は記事より"helluva"を拾います。この語は、"a hell of a"の発音つづりであるとわかりました。"a (one) hell of a..."は「(話・ぞんざいに):(量・程度などが)ものすごい、どえらい;すごくいい」と定義されていました。Cambridge Dictionary On-lineには"extremely, or extremely big"とあります。Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary(8th)には、"a hell of a.../ a helluva..."の例文として、"The firm was in a hell of mess when he took over."や"That's one helluva big house you've got."などが挙げられていました。

『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』では(話・ぞんざいに)、OALDには(slang)とあることからもわかる通り、あまり丁寧な表現ではないかと考えられます。同じくOALD には"hell"で"Its use is offensive to some people"とあるので使用には注意が必要かと思います。
