Emperor puts his foot down and passes driving test for last time

Emperor Akihito expertly zigzagged his way between traffic cones on the way to successfully renewing his driver's license for the last time on Jan. 8.

The emperor got behind the wheel of his sporty Honda Integra at a specially laid course inside the Imperial Palace.
The 82-year-old Akihito often goes for a spin inside the palace grounds with Empress Michiko in the passenger seat, usually heading off to the tennis courts or the East Gardens when they enjoy free time together on weekends.

Passing the driving test is required by law for those drivers aged 70 or older who wish to renew their license.

今回取り上げるのは見出しの“put one’s foot down”です。これは「足を踏みしめて立つ」、「断固たる態度［行動］をとる、断固として反対する」という意味の他に、「≪英≫アクセルをぐっと踏む（≪米≫floor it）.」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）という意味を持つ表現です。

LDOCEには“to say very firmly that someone must do something or must stop doing something”と共に“to make a car go faster”とありました。ちなみに“floor”も調べてみると、動詞として「＜車＞を全速力で走らせる」（『G4』）という意味があり、“floor it”も掲載されていました。

講習は皇居内で行われました。次回の講習は3年後ですが、85歳になられるということで、今回を最後の更新にされるということです。これは憶測ですが，ご年齢がご年齢であるので免許の返上を進言されたこともおありだったと思います。そうしたことに対して毅然と，楽しみにされている皇居内のドライブの延長をお決めになったとことがこの句動詞に反映されている気がしました。（Green）
