under sb's (very) nose(s) 復習
1985年の英ドラマ「シャーロック・ホームズの冒険/ The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes」の第9話「ギリシャ語通訳/ The Greek Interpreter」から表現を取り上げます。
シャーロック・ホームズの兄、マイクロフト・ホームズが事件の解決を求めてやってきました。ギリシャ語通訳のメラスが顔を絆創膏に覆われた男に詰問されたといいます。ここではメラスがホームズ兄弟、そして助手であるワトソン博士に事件について語っています。
Mr.Merlas: In fact, he had also told me he was a stranger in London. He then told me he had been here three weeks, and he was being forcibly starved.
Mr.Holmes: Did you manage to find out his name?
Mr.Merlas: Cretites. He was from Athens.But that was all I could discover, unfortunately. Another five minutes, and I should have wormed out the whole story under their very noses.
ここで取り上げる表現は “under their very noses”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』では “under O’s nose”で「〈人〉に対して（気づかれぬが）公然と」とあり，LDOCEでは “if something bad or illegal happens under someone’s nose, they do not notice it even though it is happening very close to them and they should have noticed it”と定義されています。作中では “very noses”と言うことで、強調している様子が伺えます。
この場面では、まさにギリシャ語通訳である彼が悪党に気づかれずに込み入った質問をするということで、ぴったりな表現であると感じました。（Inaho）
