The British bakery that's big in Japan
It’s Saturday morning in the upmarket Tokyo district of Azabu. Five minutes’ walk from Azabu Juban station, under a cast iron sign of a Battenberg cake, a long queue is forming at the front of which is a young, kimono-clad woman holding a large, plastic box.
Mornington Crescent, or ‘MonCre’ as the locals have termed it, was opened last year by Stacey Ward, as a British home baking school and bimonthly ‘open bakery’ shop.

今回取り上げる表現は、“cast iron”です。まず、意味を確認してみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には、「鋳鉄製の、鉄のような、確固たる」と載っていました。“cast”には、「を向ける、投げる」などの意味が思いつくと思いますが、そのほかに「鋳造する、を鋳て造る」という意味があります。今回は、この意味で用いられていることが分かります。また、文脈では、“sign”と共に使用することで、鉄製の看板となると思います。(Nao)
