今回取り上げるのは、“roundup"という表現です。この表現をLDOCE で調べてみると、“a short description of the main parts of the news, on the radio or on television”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』では、“round up"という句動詞から派生した名詞で「(主に米やや略式)〈ニュースやテレビなどの〉総括、まとめ」といった意味がありました。“round”自体に「丸くする」などの意味があったことから、“up”が付随して「いらないものを削って、まとめたこと」と表せます。(ninetails)
