Burnley missed the chance to go fourth after they were forced to come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at Cardiff. Not that Russell Slade’s men will be seeing it quite that way. With the home side leading through headed efforts from Aron Gunnarsson and Sean Morrison, a Cardiff win looked nailed on with five minutes left. Burnley, though, are a tough nut to crack this season, and when the German forward Rouwen Hennings struck, there was always a possibility the visitors might manage a ninth successive game unbeaten. Sure enough, Michael Keane popped up with a header in injury time, and the ball was deflected in off the Cardiff defender Matt Connolly.

スポーツ系の記事を読んでいると、時折見かける、以前から気になっていた表現 "a tough nut to crack" を拾います。そのまま訳すと「割るのに硬い木の実」のような意味ですが、そこから転じて、「《ややくだけて》つき合いにくいやつ; 解決しがたいもの」となります。(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』) なお、ODのフレーズ集を見ますと、上記の語義、前者の「つき合いにくいやつ」の意味になる場合は"to crack"がない" a tough nut" のみの時に限られるようです。より、英語圏での実際の意味に近づくため英英辞書を見てみますと、" A difficult problem or an opponent that is hard to beat"(OD) とりました。今回の記事では、文脈上、ODの" an opponent that is hard to beat" の意が当てはまるかと思います。 また "tough" の代わりに"hard"を用いて、"a hard nut to crack" とすることもできます。(OD)
関連して、他にも幾つか意味がありますが、"nut"には「頭」という意味もあります。 "Use your nut!"で「《英俗》頭を使ったらどうだ」(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』)との意味となったり、動詞では「木の実を拾うという」意味だけでなく、「頭」の意味から「《英・くだけて》＜人に＞ に頭突きする; 出会い頭にぶつかる， ...と鉢合わせする」という意味になります。(ibid.) ODには、"I thought he was going to nut me in the face." といった例文が出ています。よく使う語の中にも、様々な意味や使い方があって改めて表現を拾う面白さを実感しました。また、人間関係において、私自身が "a tough nut" にならないよう自戒の念を込めて、この表現を覚えたいと思います。(Dew)
