Thieves carry out daring smash-and-grab jewelry heist in Omotesando
Three men robbed a Harry Winston store in Tokyo’s Omotesando shopping district on Friday night, making off with jewelry worth \75 million ($611,000) police said Saturday.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the three, who news reports said looked like Caucasians, entered the high-end jewelry store at around 8:10 p.m., pretending to be customers.
When a security guard, 47, let them in the store, they pounced on him and punched him in the face. The men then broke the glass cases with a hammer-like object and stole 40 items, including necklaces and rings, investigators said.
At that time, the store only had two security guards on duty. There were no customers inside when the robbery took place.
