ニュージーランドでは今日から新たな国旗の候補を決める国民投票が始まりました。期間は３週間で現在出ている５つの候補を一つに絞り、その残った国旗と現在の国旗のどちらかを選ぶ投票が来年行われる予定です。

Culled from a pool of over 10,000 submissions by an aptly named "Flag Consideration Panel," three of the final designs feature a prominent fern leaf -- a national symbol that also recalls a flag popular among the country's rugby fans.
The fourth design features a black and white koru -- a Maori symbol reminiscent of curled fern frond, and the fifth, recently included in the final round of voting after a social media campaign, is known as the Red Peak design and features red, black and blue triangles intersected by a white chevron.

取り上げるのは”fern frond”です。

まず”fern”を『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』で引いてみると、「〘植〙シダ」とありました。これはニュージーランドを象徴する植物です。

そして”frond”には「（シダ・ヤシなどの）葉」という意味があります。合わせて「シダの葉」となりますが、ここでは”curled”がありますので、まだ葉が開いていなく丸まっている状態のことを言っています。候補となっている国旗には渦巻のような絵柄が描かれています。

ここから連想する語として、「ゼンマイ」は英語で”royal fern”（G4）や”Osmund”「《ゼンマイ科ゼンマイ属のシダ植物の総称》」（Weblio）というそうです。また、「ワラビ」は”bracken”とありました。(bookmark)
