『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』には「 [集合的に；単数・複数扱い]（フランスなどの）憲兵（隊）；その建物」という意味が載っていました。Wikipediaによると、「国家憲兵隊（フランス）」は、「フランス共和国において陸軍・海軍・空軍に次ぐ第4の軍隊として組織されている」「フランス国家警察と並び、フランスにおける主要警察機関の一つ」だそうです。「フランスの警察」と訳している辞書もありました。

“gendarmerie”は組織のことを意味する一方で、その隊員である「警察官、憲兵」は”gendarme”といいます。これは古フランス語の”gens d’armes”が語源です。”gen”は”nation”や”people”を意味し、”armes”は”weapons of a warrior”を意味します。LDOCEを見てみると”a French police officer”と定義されていました。(bookmark)
