stir 復習
11月中旬になり、デパートでは早くも福袋のPR合戦が開始されました。
Department stores are already in a marketing battle over fukubukuro lucky bags for the New Year, trying to attract young customers with such themes as rugby and marriage.
The Matsuya Ginza department store in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, held a press preview for its fukubukuro on Monday. As the marriage of singer and actor Masaharu Fukuyama recently made a stir and the Japanese national team performed magnificently at the Rugby World Cup, the department store has prepared about 700 types of lucky bags, some based on the themes of marriage and rugby.

今回は記事の中から"stir"を取り上げます。かき混ぜることという意味の他に、『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』によると「騒ぎ、混乱、興奮」という意味があり、記事の中の"made a stir" は「騒ぎを起こした」という意味が取れました。LDOCEでも確認したところ、様々な意味がありましたが"to make someone have a strong feeling or reaction"と定義されていました。
調べていると、stirは他にも刑務所という意味もあり、stir-crazyで「一か所にずっといて頭がおかしくなった」という表現もありました。
以前にも似たような表現が取り上げられていたので参考にさせていただきました。(lua)
