宮崎市中心部で歩道を暴走した軽乗用車にはねられ2人が死亡、4人が重軽傷を負った事故で運転していた男性（73）が歩道と車道を間違えて走行した可能性があることが宮崎県警の取材でわかりました。運転手は数年前から認知症の症状が現れており、通院もしていたようです。また、てんかんの持病もあったようです。
Driver in fatal Miyazaki pedestrian accident had epileptic seizure in past: acquaintances
A 73-year-old man who rammed his car into pedestrians in downtown Miyazaki Wednesday had suffered an epileptic seizure in the past, his acquaintances said Thursday.
Miyazaki police are also aware of the medical records of the driver, Mitsugi Kawauchi, 73, from neighboring Kagoshima Prefecture. But it still remains unclear whether his health had anything to do with the accident, they said.
今回取り上げる表現は “seizure”です。「つかむ、差し押さえ」という意味が思い浮かびますが、ここでは「（病気などの）発作；卒中；心臓麻痺」という意味で使われています。LDOCEでは “a sudden condition in which someone cannot control the movement of their body, which continues for a short time”と定義づけられています。“epileptic seizure”で「てんかん発作」となります。（Inaho）
