cock-and-bull story
Police officer: Name of deceased, Fred Casely.
Amos: Fred Casely? How could he be a burglar? My wife knows him. He sold us our furniture. He gave us 10% off. You told me he was a burglar.
Police officer: You mean he was dead when you got home?
Amos: She had him covered in a sheet and she’s telling me some… cock-and-bull story about this burglar… and how I ought to say I did it ‘cause I was sure to get off.
辞書には「でたらめな話、まゆつば物」(『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店)、“a story or excuse that is silly and unlikely but is told as if it were true”とありました。 (Green)
