６日、２０１５年のノーベル物理学賞を東京大宇宙線研究所の梶田隆章教授とカナダ・クイーンズ大のアート・マクドナルド名誉教授に授与すると発表がありました。素粒子ニュートリノに質量があることを証明し、素粒子物理学の基本法則を書き換えた業績が評価されました。
Takaaki Kajita of Japan and Arthur McDonald of Canada won the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday for discovering the “chameleon-like” nature of neutrinos, work that yielded the crucial insight that the tiny particles have mass.

Kajita showed in 1998 that neutrinos captured at the detector underwent a metamorphosis in the atmosphere, the academy said. Three years later McDonald found that neutrinos coming from the sun also switched identities.

今回取り上げる表現は、“metamorphosis”です。まず、Longman Dictionary of Contemporary Englishで英語の定義を確認してみると、“a process in which something changes completely into something very different”とありました。そこで、日本語の意味を見てみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には「（魔力などによる）変形、著しい変化、大変貌、＜生物用語＞変態」と記載されていました。英語の定義と意味の差異はないと思います。また、この表現にある“meta”に注目してみます。“meta”は、連結要素で、「場所・状態の変化」という意味があります。二日連続で日本人がノーベル賞受賞なさって大変嬉しいです。梶田教授、マクドナルド教授受賞おめでとうございます。(Nao)
