ninetailsくんの記事とかぶりますが，年々コインランドリーの利用者が増加しているようです。

Until the 1990s, coin laundries were mainly located in public bathhouses and on shopping streets in urban areas, and patronized mainly by male students and company workers living alone.
“patronized”について取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版(大修館書店)』によると「保護する」「(店、劇場など)をひいきにする」という意味がありました。LDOCEでも確認すると、“to use or visit a shop, restaurant etc.”とあり、ひいきにするという表現はありませんでしたが、一人暮らしの男子学生や会社員の方が常連で利用していたということがわかりました。
patronized の語源を調べてみると、ラテン語で父の意味があるpaterだそうで、そこから保護するなどの意味が発展してきていることがわかりました。
コインランドリーは時間に余裕がないと大変ですし、衛生的にも不安があり、進んで利用したことはなかったのですが、大きなものも洗えたり、乾燥機を利用するといった使い方次第では便利な面もあることがわかり、少しイメージが変わりました。(lua)
