lacquer 復習
早くも百貨店では2016年のおせち料理の予約が受付開始となったようです。
Major department stores and supermarkets have started fully accepting reservations for osechi New Year’s meals in the middle of this month. Premium sets featuring luxurious dishes have been popular in recent years, as have osechi with dishes that can be enjoyed by the entire family.
The Takashimaya department store held a preview of osechi for the press at its Nihonbashi store on Sept. 9. It plans to offer about 800 varieties, about 100 more than last year, including a luxurious set featuring dishes made by a long-established Japanese-style restaurant in multi-tiered Wajimanuri lacquer boxes. This is the first time for Takashimaya to sell the luxurious set, which costs \496,800 including tax.

今回は“lacquer”取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版(大修館書店)』によりますと、「ラッカー(セルロース誘導体を薬剤に溶かし、時には顔料を加えた塗料)、漆」とありました。ペルシア語のlak(赤色天然染料)と、lac insectというラックカイガラムシが木の枝に分泌する樹脂状物質を染料にしたことからできた言葉だそうです。動詞では「欠点を巧みな言葉で言い繕う」「ヘアスプレーをかける」という意味もありました。
料理はもちろんですが、箱も伝統ある輪島塗の重箱でとても高価ですが、一つ一つこだわったものが詰まったおせちだとわかりました。(lua)
