安くて飲みやすい、チリ産のワインが注目されています。
ある販売店ではワインコーナーの約4割が輸入したチリ産のもので、日本がチリと経済協定を結んだことで割と安く販売され、日本人の口にも合うようで、需要が多いことが明らかとなっています。
French wine has long reigned as the king of imported wine in Japan in terms of annual import volume. However, soaring imports of Chilean wine are posing a threat to the French dominance of the market.
The development has been attributed to the reasonable prices and palatable flavors of Chilean wine.
Imports of Chilean wine surged after the Economic Partnership Agreement between Japan and Chile was put in place, making it easier to lower the prices of Chilean wine. Wine sales competition will likely intensify toward year-end, when demand increases.
Observers have pointed out that Chilean wines, with less astringent tastes, are suited to Japanese palates.

今回取り上げるのは“astringent”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版(大修館書店)』によると「化粧品が脱脂性の」「批評などが手厳しい、味が渋い」とありました。医学でよく使われるようですが、ここでは渋い味として使われていました。渋いはよく bitter を耳にしますが、渋いぶどう酒は rough wine、渋い柿は sour persimmon と言い、astringent は形式ばった表現とありましたが、bitter 以外にも表現を学びました。
このワインの価格を上げ、チリ大地震への寄付金としている販売店も多くあるようです。人々の暮らしが早く充分になるよう願っています。(lua)
