今回取り上げる表現は 見出しの“toast”です。「トースト」といいますとパンをこんがりと焼きあげる様子を思い浮かべますが、ここではその意味で用いられてはいません。G4（大修館書店）で確認しますと、「〈人〉に乾杯する；〈健康・成功・新造船など〉を祝して乾杯する」とありました。書くまでもないかと思いますが、“toast”は「乾杯、祝杯；乾杯の発声」という意味があるため、これが動詞として用いられた表現です。「乾杯」に相当する表現は他にも様々ですが、有名な表現に “Cheers!”がありますね。これらの表現の違いをLDOCEで調べてみますと、”cheers”が “used when you lift a glass of alcohol before you drink it, in order to say that you hope the people you are drinking with will be happy and have good health”とあるのに対し、 “toast”は “to drink a glass of wine etc to thank someone, wish someone luck, or celebrate something”とありました。同じ「乾杯」の表現でも絶妙に意味が異なることが分かりました。ワインを乾杯するときは “toast!”を使いたいですね。（Inaho）
