Even as he said that Saturday night was his boxing swan song, Floyd Mayweather Jr. continued to show the swagger and the skill that have been the hallmarks of his 19-year career.
Mayweather came out attacking and scored an easy victory with a unanimous decision over Andre Berto in a welterweight world title bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, improving his record to 49-0. Despite all the skepticism about whether he is ready to start the next chapter in his life, Mayweather continued to insist that this was indeed his final fight.
今回取り上げるのは、“swan song”という表現です。直訳してみると「白鳥の歌」となりますが、これはヨーロッパの伝説の1つである「生涯鳴かない白鳥が死ぬ間際に歌う最も美しい歌」を意味しています。この意味から「（引退前の作家や作曲家などの）最後の作品、絶筆」（『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』）を表しています。ちなみにThe Free Dictionary by FARLEXで調べてみると、“the last act, appearance, publication, or utterance of a person before retirement or death”という定義が見つかりました。
今回の試合で圧倒的な強さで勝利したメイウェザー選手を見ていると、まだ引退は早いのではないかとも思え、非常に残念です。(ninetails)
