Divide in ruling coalition deepens as Abe aide refuses to step down over gaffe

The prime minister's office wants to close the curtain on the political turmoil sparked by controversial remarks by Yosuke Isozaki, a special adviser to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, after the top aide apologized at a House of Councillors special panel meeting on Aug. 3.

中略

Isozaki was involved in efforts to establish the Civil Protection Act when he served as a counsellor in the Cabinet secretariat. As special adviser to the prime minister, Isozaki has been in charge of security legislation. Therefore, the prime minister cannot have Isozaki resign simply because of his "sketchy" remarks. An official close to the prime minister's office said, "It will also be harsh for the government if Isozaki, who has been working primarily on the security legislation at the prime minister's office, is to resign in the midst of deliberations on the bills."

今回取り上げるのは、“sketchy”という表現です。Urban Dictionaryで調べてみると、“someone or something that gives off a bad feeling”や“someone or something that just is not right”という定義が見つかりました。この表現には「スケッチ風の、大ざっぱな、皮相な」(『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』)などの意味がありますが、今回の記事では「不適切な、疑わしい」といった意味で用いられています。(ninetails)
