The Tokyo Family Court has launched an oversight system for lawyers who work as guardians of adults with difficulties making decisions due to dementia or disabilities to prevent inappropriate operation of such services.

Similar cases involving lawyers have been reported across the country. According to the Supreme Court, at least 62 cases totaling 1.12 billion yen of inappropriate asset management, such as embezzlement, by lawyers, judicial scriveners and other legal professions were reported in a period between June 2010, when research on the matter began, and the end of 2014. A Tokyo-based former lawyer who was a guardian of a woman with dementia was arrested this year for allegedly spending over 100 million yen of her assets.
