東芝の不適正会計問題で過去5年間の営業利益を過大計上していた金額が1700億円にまでなると分かりました。

Toshiba Corp. is likely to have overstated operating profits over the past five years by more than \170 billion, according to sources, as another \20 billion is likely to be added to an earlier estimate in excess of \150 billion. The firm plans to take corrective action by the end of August.

今回取り上げるのは“inflate”です。“inflate”は「・・を［空気・ガスなどで］ふくらませる、膨張させる」や、「〈通貨〉を膨張させる、〈物価など〉をつり上げる；〈経費など〉を［・・で］水増しする」とありました。「『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版』大修館書店」また、LDOCEには“to increase in price or make something increase in price:”と記されています。名詞形は“inflation”ですが、日本では「インフレ」と言うフレーズで馴染み深いものです。

今回の問題では、田中久雄社長が引責辞任する見通しとなり、副会長である佐々木則夫氏を含め、９月の臨時株主総会で経営体制を刷新する模様です。（faith）
