Giants maul Tigers, extend slim CL lead
The Yomiuri Giants inched another step away from the bunched-up Central League by smacking around one of Japan’s top pitchers on Saturday at Tokyo Dome, handing the Hanshin Tigers an 11-2 beatdown behind Miles Mikolas and an offensive explosion.
Mikolas, a first-year import hurler, put in a quality start — with six innings and two runs allowed on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts — and Hayato Sakamoto led a 15-hit attack with a solo homer, and a double as the Giants moved 2½ games ahead of the second-place Tigers in the CL.

今回取り上げるのは、“bunched-up”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“to stay close together in a group, or to make people do this”と載っていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』には、「一団〔束〕になる、かたまる、丸くなる」とありました。そのため、セ・リーグの各チームの順位が「密集した」状態を表しており、「大混戦（の）」「日替わり首位」を意味していると分かりました。
