今回の記事で気になった表現は、“unexploded shell”です。読んだ際に「不発弾」ではないかと予想しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）を見てみると、予想通りの意味でした。“shell”には、「貝殻、甲羅」以外に「爆弾、爆発物」という意味がありました。“unexploded”「爆発していない」と組み合わさることで、「不発弾」になります。他にも、不発弾を表す表現がありました。本文にもある“unexploded ordnance”や“dud shell”です。“dud”は、「不発弾、失敗、役に立たない人」という意味です。(Nao)
