bringing down the house #2

とある少女のダンスがネット上で話題になっています。

6-Year-Old Girl Brings Down The House With Sassy Aretha Franklin Dance

Six-year-old Johanna Colón stole the show at her dance recital this weekend with her fierce and fabulous performance to Aretha Franklin's "Respect."

On Sunday, Johanna's mom Elissa posted a video of the little girl's show-stopping performance on Facebook, and in just two days, it has already been shared over half a million times.

The video shows Johanna in all her sassy Aretha glory, bringing down the house with her confident pivots and poses. Her mom told Today that the tiny dancer practiced her routine "constantly" in the weeks leading up to the show.

In an interview with her local North Carolina news station ABC11, Elissa said that Johanna's younger brother has Hirschsprung's disease, which requires a lot of care, hospitalizations and surgeries. Throughout it all, however, Johanna has remained "very sweet and very kind," her mom added.

"She spends a lot of time taking care of [her brother] and visiting him in the hospital. Dance is where she gets to let loose and enjoy herself."

That love for dance certainly shines through.

とりあげる表現は“bringing down the house”です。そのままを読み取れば「劇場を壊す」となりますが、『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館書店)によると「bring the house down:観客をどっと笑わせる、満場の大喝采を浴びる」(If someone or something brings the house down during a play or show, they make the people watching it laugh or clap very loudly--CDO)とありました。1700年代から一般に浸透した表現で、観客の大歓声が会場の建物の屋根を突き抜いてしまいそうだという例えから生まれたものです。

多くの人の心を掴んだ少女のダンスはFacebookから広まり、TVにまで取り上げられました。(Chris)
